Safety Town is a national program that teaches young children about safety and good citizenship. Topics include traffic, bicycle, home water and fire safety, as well as litter prevention and recycling. Through songs, videos and classroom exercises, your child will learn correct safety vocabulary, traffic light colors, the difference between left and right, how to "stop, drop and roll" in case of fire, when and how to dial 911, and much more. Classroom instruction is augmented by practice sessions in the Safety Town miniature village and Fire Safety House located at Barnes Early Childhood Center 20090 Morningside Dr., Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.
The Safety Town program is geared toward children entering kindergarten or first grade in the fall.
Classes are presented by Safety Town's own trained instructors, as well as public safety officers and representatives from community organizations. Cosponsored by Grosse Pointe Public School System and the public safety departments of the five Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods. Grosse Pointe Safety Town is accredited by National Safety Town in Ohio.
Parent Information Program:
Parents are encouraged to attend the 2 1/2 hour Parent Information program conducted by public safety officers during each two week session. Date, time and location of Parent Information Program will be provided to parents on the child's first Safety Town day. You'll learn lots of important safety tips, and you will be better able to help your child get the most out of his or her experience in Safety Town. Come with questions and join in the discussions with other parents!
