The selection process for the Cum Laude chapter of the National Honor Society at South High School will begin in February, 2010. This spring selection is for both juniors and seniors.  Juniors must have a cumulative Grade Pointe Average (GPA) of 3.33 or above at the end of 5 semesters of work; and seniors and the end of 7 semesters of work to be eligible for consideration by the Faculty Council.

Students with the above eligibility will receive letters through the U.S. mail in the first or second week of February. The necessary forms to complete for consideration will be included in the mailing along with the necessary deadlines and instructions for completion. The selection process will culminate with an induction ceremony on Thursday, May 13th in the Auditorium with a reception to follow in Cleminson Hall.

Membership in NHS is by invitation of the Faculty Council appointed by the Principal following guidelines established by the national organization.  To qualify students must show exemplary work in all four equally weighted categories of scholarship, service, leadership and character.  The faculty advisor will remove the students’ names from all forms where students have listed their service and leadership activities, code with a number, and then circulate among the 5 members of the Council for review.  The council members consider the quality, range and variety of activities as well as the time spent.  All staff members who know a student, rank his or her character based on the demonstration of high standards of personal honesty, reliability, integrity, courtesy, concern and respect for others, and full cooperation with regulations and directives.  The scale used is 4.0 for outstanding, 3.5 for excellent, 3.0 for very good, 2.5 for good, 2.0 for average, 1.5 for below average, 1.0 for poor, and 0 for unacceptable.  The advisor averages the ratings.   Three of five of the Faculty Council members must approve a student’s leadership and service activities and the average character rating must be 3.0 or above for the student to receive an invitation to membership.
