Sojourner Truth Essay Contest Award: 1st place $500, 2nd place $200, 3rd place $100 Deadline: November 20, 2009 Any high school junior or senior from Grosse Pointe. A 500-750 word essay that is typed and double-spaced. Judging will be on quality of writing and clarity of message. Essay submissions should elaborate on what this quote from Sojourner Truth means in terms of modern international relations:
"Those are the same stars, and that is the same moon, that look down upon your brothers and sisters, and which they see as they look up to them, though they are ever so far away from us, and each other."

Metro PCS Award: $2500 Deadline: November 25, 2009 Awarding scholarships to high school seniors who plan to attend a college or university. Criteria will be students who have demonstrated exceptional involvement in volunteerism and community service, in addition to academics and other criteria. One $25,000 will be awarded nationally. Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award Application Award: (28) $1000 Deadline: December 1, 2009 Criteria: A young woman between the ages of 14 and 17, demonstrated initiative in both identifying a problem and trying to solve it, have had significant and noteworthy accomplishments as volunteers. Students must submit an original essay about someone they consider an everyday hero. GPA or test scores are not a part of this scholarship.
